About Econation

Econation is New Zealand’s independent source of information and education about environmental sustainability.

We help people learn about sustainable practices by providing information, education and training. On this website there are over 300 pages about sustainable energy, transport, water, consumer goods, waste and more.

What is sustainability?
Sustainability is the fundamental condition of any system that lasts. If we want to sustain the earth's ecosystems (which provide everything we need in order to survive – air, water, food, raw materials for clothes and shelter, etc) we must act sustainably. We describe sustainability as looking after the future now.

Econation exists to promote the concept of sustainability, to inform people about sustainability in such a way that they can develop a plan of action for implementing sustainable practices in their life.

What’s in a name?
Words and names by their very nature signify and define things.

Eco- when used as part of a word means that it is concerned with living things in relation to their environment.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge described a Nation as being the 'unity of a people'.

Conation is a type of mental activity. It applies to any mental activity that provides proactive direction to behaviour. It covers the intentional, goal-oriented, striving, planned and considered aspects of motivation. Every time you ask (and answer) 'What will I do?' or 'What are my plans and commitments?' you are having a conative thought.

We define Econation as people unified in relating to their environment with purpose and consideration. The purpose in this case is sustainability and consideration is literally 'thoughtfulness' with connotations of care, respect and the awareness of consequences.

Michael Lockhart
Founder and CEO

Econation is the brainchild of
Michael Lockhart.

Michael is a social entrepreneur. After a career in design, communication and publishing Michael decided to give something back. Initially he set up ARMS Limited, with a colleague. ARMS coaches and mentors artists and creatives to succeed in promoting and marketing themselves.

As a passionate advocate and expert in e-marketing – sustainable marketing – Michael also learned more about business sustainability practices generally. In time he became a champion of sustainability.

He felt there was not enough straightforward, unbiased information and education about sustainability for New Zealand people, communities and businesses. Michael set up Econation to address this gap.
