Clean development mechanism

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is another mechanism that developed countries can use to achieve their Kyoto targets. It officially started in 2005. They can do this by funding projects in developing countries that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as a reforestation project, a new wind farm, the use of landfill biogas to produce electricity and so on. The participating developed country can then put the emission credits gained from the project towards its target. Ideally, the CDM results in the creation of emission reduction projects in developing countries that would not otherwise have taken place. Many CDM projects are now underway in preparation for the Kyoto first commitment period.  Many of these are in Brazil, India, China and Bangladesh.
