Families

The family unit is the fundamental unit of society and therefore plays a significant role in sustainability. Families often make decisions as a whole. Parents, in particular, make choices together and they are influenced by the needs and desires of their children.

The sorts of decisions that families make which have an impact on social and environmental sustainability include:
  • how big the family is
  • where the family lives – what area, town/city, suburb etc
  • what house they will live in
  • how the household operates
  • where the children go to school and how will they get there
  • where the parents work and how they get there
  • how much money is spent and on what
  • if, when and how holidays are taken
It is important that parents set a good example and provide guidance and encouragement to children. Good lifelong attitudes and behaviours can be developed from a young age – in particular children (and parents!) should be encouraged to be caring of others and of the environement, to not be wasteful or careless.
