Global organisation

Sustainability is a global issue and nations must unite in a drive towards sustainability. The human impacts of unsustainable practices are felt globally, the most obvious example being climate change.

Nations don't operate in isolation, there is a constant movement of goods, services, information and even people between countries.

In particular there are a number of roles and responsibilities for governmental and non-govermental organisations acting on a global scale:
  • International protocols and treaties agreed between governments allow for: better co-operation; standardised frameworks and metrics for monitoring and managing activities; higher levels of information sharing and forums for ongoing debate, negotiation and agreement.
  • International non-government organisations are vehicles for the exchange of information and collaboration between nations on a myriad of issues that affect sustainability.
  • Education and research institutes have always shared information in formal and informal ways. (The free exchange of information promotes sustainability whereas the harbouring of information impedes sustainability.)
