Local government have the responsibility to implement policies that relate to local economic, social and environmental sustainability. This involves setting and monitoring by-laws, regulations and guidelines for practices like effluent discharges, gas and particle emissions, water use, land-use, resource management and so on.

Local and regional government
Local and regional government is where the 'rubber hits the road' for sustainability. This level of government is closest to the day-to-day lives of people and is responsbile for the sustainable management of local and regional resources. It can directly support and influence sustainability thinking and practices in the community.
The types of sustainable practices that local/regional government agencies need to set a good example to businesses and other organisations in terms of such practices as:
- conserving energy
- employing green building practices
- reducing waste
- generally employing efficiency measures - especially by streamlining the administrative process (ie red tape)
- environmental purchasing policies
- staff health and safety
